Description: Anthony Lane was commissioned by the Victorian EPA to write hydrogeological assessment guidelines in collaboration with Tamie Weaver (University of Melbourne) and John Leonard (John Leonard Consulting Services Pty Ltd). The guidelines were developed to provide an overview of hydrogeological assessment methodologies, and provide justification for using various investigative techniques. The guidelines were developed to support the undertakings of the State Environment Protection Policy (SEPP) “Groundwaters of Victoria” (1997) in protecting groundwater resources, and minimise the risk of detrimental effects on the quality and quantity of these resources. The guideline was initially developed as a detailed (60pp) document then abridged to the form of the guideline titled Hydrogeological Assessment Guidelines (Groundwater Quality) EPA Publication 668, Sept 2006. The original long version is available at http://eprints.infodiv.unimelb.edu.au/archive/00001792/

Description: Kyenton Kompost is a composting operation that produces high grade compost from a mixture of the excess sawdust from a local sawmill, and food waste from companies. The site near Kyenton, and approximately 5km from Lauriston Reservoir. Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) expressed concerns in relation to the risk of pollution of surface water and groundwater. Lane Consulting undertook a detailed assessment of the hydrogeology, conducted testing and reported on spring and well water samples from the site, and reviewed relevant regulatory and guidelines in relation to the site selection, design and operation of compost facilities. Relevant information was collated, the risk to groundwater evaluated and protection and monitoring measures recommended.
Project: Effluent reuse Maryborough, Creswick and Beaufort
Project Owner/Client: Fisher Stewart
Services Provided: Hydrogeological Assessment (desk study)
Description: Fisher Stewart was conducting an investigation into the selection of potential sites for the irrigation of wastewater from Maryborough, Creswick and Beaufort. The land capability (soils, topography etc), climate and hydrology, agribusiness impact and environmental impacts were considered in the areas surrounding the treatment plants. Lane Consulting provided review of the hydrogeological aspects of the investigation and comments were ultimately incorporated into the final report.

Groundwater Contamination Assessment

Project: Groundwater Contamination Investigation, Mobil Refinery, Altona
Project Owner/Client: EPA Victoria
Services Provided: Groundwater and NAPL Sampling, testing & reporting
Description: Lane Consulting was engaged by EPA to investigate the possible occurrence of contamination of groundwater within and in the vicinity of the Mobil Altona Refinery. The work involved the review of available reports on groundwater monitoring as the site; inspection of existing groundwater monitoring bores, measurement of water levels, and obtaining samples of liquids from selected bores. The work was performed under rigorous OHS management regime complying with both Mobil and Lane Consulting’s OHS management systems. Samples were tested in a laboratory selected by EPA for possible presence of contaminants of interest.
Project: MAFRI Development, Queenscliff
Project Owner/Client: DNRE
Services provided: Hydrogeological Assessment & Ecological Risk Assessment
Description: The proposed relocation of the Marine and Fresh Water Research Institute (MAFRI) in Queenscliff was granted a planning permit by the Borough of Queenscliff subject to issue of a Statement of Environmental Audit certifying the site as suitable for the proposed development. Lane Consulting was engaged as a review consultant and then hydrgeological assessor engaged by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment to assist the auditor and EPA to a achieve a satisfactory audit outcome. Work involved detailed analysis, numerical modelling by MODFLOW and HELP (in association with Flow Environmental Management) to evaluate the movement of contamination at the site. A PAN was subsequently issued to address more detailed assessment requirements including marine biological and water quality assessments. Detailed groundwater investigations and monitoring was undertaken utilising Geoprobe Implant Wells.
Project: Groundwater Remediation Program, NSW
Project owner/Client: Confidential
Services Provided: Investigation, design and Implementation of groundwater remediation
Description: Lane Consulting was engaged to provide an opinion about likely source of ammonia contaminant in surface waters body near a manufacturing plant in southern NSW. Groundwater was found to be contaminated with a breakdown of products from urea formaldehyde resin. A clean up strategy was developed, works designed to implemented and monitored over a number of years. A pump & treat system was implemented utilising a series of pumping bores and a large diameter well. The case ended in a prosecution and Anthony Lane provided expert evidence to the Land & Environment Court.
