Anthony Lane

Anthony has been working in the assessment and management of the environmental aspects of business and government since 1975, initially through the application of his specialist skills in hydrogeology. He is particularly experienced in the evaluation and management of environmental risks and related financial liabilities often associated with contamination of land and water and inadequate management of waste and landfills. His full range of expertise includes land and groundwater contamination assessment and auditing; waste management and landfill; water resources development; mine dewatering design; groundwater resource supply engineering, including design and installation of deep (>700m) wells. Anthony has worked or studied in eight other countries. He is active in developing and contributing to hydrogeological and environmental engineering and science programs at RMIT in particular, but also at The University of Melbourne and Monash University. Anthony is an EPA-accredited Environmental/Site Auditor registered and practicing in Victoria, NSW and SA. He is also a Certified Environmental Practitioner (CEnvP) with the Environmental Institute of Australia and New Zealand.

John Piper
Director/ Senior Principal

John has had experience in consulting geotechnical engineering throughout Australia and overseas since 1977. After completing a Bachelor of Civil Engineering at the University of Melbourne and then a Masters Degree in Soil Mechanics, he commenced work as a geotechnical engineer with Golder Associates and then Soilmech, becoming engineering manager. In 1988, John commenced Piper & Associates’ operations and has led the firm since that time. He has a wide experience in all types of geotechnical engineering and environmental assessments. His particular expertise is in wastewater treatment plants, landfills, dams, roads and slope stability assessments. John has written papers on technical issues, lectured students in geomechanics and made many presentations on geotechnical issues to both private organisations as well as public. He is a registered building practitioner, NPER3 registered within the Institution of Engineers and a NATA signatory

Wai Leng Chek

Wai Leng has been in the contaminated land and environmental chemistry industry since 1984. Her expertise includes contaminated land, environmental audit (contaminated land and industrial facilities), environmental impact assessment, environmental risk assessment and management, and analytical chemistry. She has worked at various sites across Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania and Queensland in Australia, and in Malaysia. Her clients have included local and federal government including those in the infrastructure sectors of road, rail, ports, airports and telecommunication, and major private organisations including the oil and gas, power and manufacturing industries, private developers, financiers and land owners. Wai Leng has also been involved in the development of Australian and other national guidelines for the assessment of contaminated land.

Peter has over 14 years experience in various aspects of soil, groundwater and environmental investigations, assessment, audit, remediation and management projects and programs. Peter has extensive experience in the assessment, management and remediation of soil and groundwater contamination with the project management of large and complex assessment and remediation projects. He has undertaken a large number of contaminated land site assessment studies with extensive experience in the Petro-chemical Industry, including field investigations, data review, interpretation and reporting, modelling of contaminant fate and transport, quantitative environmental risk assessments and was managing various large groundwater remediation projects. Peter also has extensive experience in groundwater resources assessment and management, waste-water disposal, landfills, mine dewatering, geothermal exploration and resources utilisation. Peter has worked and studied in eight different countries in Europe, South-East-Asia and in New Zealand. Peter is also a Certified Environmental Practitioner (CEnvP) by the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand and a Registered Professional Geoscientist (RPGeo in Environmental Geoscience and Hydrogeology) with the Australian Institute of Geoscience.

David Louwrens

David Louwrens has 23 years experience in exploration and mining geology. He is a Project Manager on the Lane Piper team working on various environmental assessments and auditing projects, in particular those with a hydrogeological emphasis.
He has worked in the environmental industry for five years and is a project manager in the Lane Piper team, working on various environmental assessments and auditing projects, in particular those with a hydrogeological emphasis. He has undertaken a number of landfill and contaminated site groundwater and soil evaluation studies, including comprehensive data review and interpretation.

Davin Slade
Associate Geotechnical Engineer
Bachelor Engineering (Civil) Monash University, Melbourne
Davin has over 10 years engineering experience, conducting and supervising a wide range of geotechnical investigations and assessments, including residential, commercial and industrial developments across metropolitan Melbourne and country Victoria. He has specialised in slope stability assessments in the Shire of Yarra Ranges and Mornington Peninsula, especially with regard to residential construction and coastal development. He has a wide experience with a wide range of geotechnical engineering software including CIRCLY (Mechanistic pavement design), XSLOPE and SLOPE/W (slope stability analysis), WALLAP (Retaining wall analysis), UNICONE (Pile analysis), UNISETTLE (settlement analysis), Mapinfo and CAD. He is also skilled in developing EXCEL spreadsheet based software to develop engineering solutions.

Danny McDonald
Associate Environmental Geochemist

Danny McDonald has completed his PhD in environmental geochemistry researching the chemical stability of acid rock drainage treatment sludges. Danny has extensive knowledge and experience in geochemical investigations and modelling relevant to the environmental management industry. He also has experience in laboratory analytical techniques (inorganic) for environmental contamination testing. Danny has been involved in provision of remedial solutions at minesites where emergency treatment of contaminated water was implemented. In his role as project manager at Lane Piper, Danny is responsible for managing environmental investigation and auditing programs, in particular assisting an EPA-appointed Environmental Auditor (Anthony Lane) in the conduct of statutory environmental audits. He is a lead consultant on all relevant projects involving the generation, transport and fate of inorganic contaminants in soil and groundwater.

Michael Elbrow

Michael has over 23 years of experience in construction and soil testing. He has worked on road construction, housing developments, landfill sites, and structural projects in both South Africa and the United Kingdom. Michael has previous run his own laboratory in South Africa and was principal technician for a UKAS accredited laboratory in the UK.
